In the late hours of a Monday night in Topeka, Kansas, the life of Michael L. Stringfield, a 42-year-old Black / African American man, was tragically cut short. On February 15, 2021, just before 11:30 p.m., the sound of gunshots echoed in the 3700 block of SW Plaza Drive, prompting multiple calls to the Shawnee County Emergency Communications Center. When officers arrived at the scene, they found Stringfield in a parking lot, suffering from what appeared to be gunshot wounds.
He was pronounced deceased at the scene, becoming the city's first homicide victim of the year.
Michael, born on July 23, 1978, in Leavenworth, Kansas, was known for his love of rapping and music, but above all, he cherished spending time with his family. He was described as a man who was well-liked and loved by many. His sudden and violent death left his family, including his parents and several siblings, grappling with immense grief and a lack of answers. In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, Topeka police initiated an investigation, utilizing a K9 unit to track potential suspects from the location of the incident. This led them to three individuals who were taken into custody and transported to the Law Enforcement Center for interviews. However, these individuals were later released, and no arrests were made in connection with the homicide.
Months after his death, Michael Stringfield's case remained unsolved, and his family continued to search for justice. They spoke out about their enduring pain and the fear of his killer remaining at large. His brother, Marcus Stringfield, expressed the family's bewilderment about why Michael was in that particular area on the night he was killed. The family made public pleas for anyone with information to come forward, hoping that even a small detail could help bring closure and hold the person or persons responsible for his death accountable. A GoFundMe campaign was also started to help cover his funeral costs, as he did not have life insurance. The investigation into the death of Michael Stringfield remains ongoing.
