In the summer of 2001, 13-year-old Lydia Varo-Braschler, a Caucasian female from Wisconsin, was visiting her aunt in the Big Lake area of Skagit County, Washington. On July 2nd, she went for a walk from her relative's home on Highway 9, seemingly towards a nearby convenience store, and never returned. Her disappearance prompted extensive search and rescue efforts, but the young girl had vanished without a trace, leaving her family distraught and desperate for answers.
For nine months, Lydia's whereabouts remained a painful mystery. The search for the missing teenager came to a tragic end on April 17, 2002. A woman searching for mushrooms discovered human remains over an embankment off Lake Cavanaugh Road, approximately two miles from Highway 9 and about six miles from where Lydia was last seen. The Skagit County Coroner later confirmed the remains belonged to Lydia Varo-Braschler and determined that she had died from blunt force trauma to the head. Her death was immediately investigated as a homicide.
Despite the discovery, the investigation into who was responsible for Lydia's death has grown cold over the years, becoming one of Skagit County's unsolved homicides. In the initial stages of the investigation, authorities questioned a cousin who was among the last people to see her alive; however, he reportedly passed several polygraph tests. Detectives also collected DNA evidence from the scene, but it has not led to the identification of any suspects in the United States or Canada.
As the years have passed without a resolution, Lydia's family continues to seek justice. Her mother and aunts have made public pleas for anyone with information to come forward, believing that someone out there holds the key to solving the case. They remember Lydia as a trusting girl from a small town, a trait they fear may have contributed to her tragic fate. A small memorial marks the location where her body was found, a somber reminder of a young life cut short and a case that remains without an arrest or any named suspects.
