In the early morning hours of Saturday, November 20, 2021, the life of Adrian Dwayne Williams, a 31-year-old Black/African American male from Olathe, Kansas, was tragically cut short in Topeka. Shortly after midnight, Topeka police were dispatched to the 2000 block of S.E. Pennsylvania Avenue after receiving multiple reports of gunshots in the area.
Upon their arrival, officers encountered a large gathering of people and discovered Williams on the ground with apparent gunshot wounds.
Despite the immediate response from American Medical Response paramedics, his injuries proved to be fatal, and he was pronounced dead at the scene. Williams, who was born in Kansas City, Kansas, and a graduate of Olathe East High School, had been considering a move to Topeka.
The investigation into the homicide progressed swiftly. By that evening, Topeka police had identified a suspect in the fatal shooting. Christopher Mendez, a 21-year-old from Topeka, was taken into custody in connection with Williams's death. He was subsequently booked into the Shawnee County Department of Corrections on a requested charge of first-degree murder. The case then moved to the Shawnee County District Attorney's office for the formal filing of charges.
