In the wake of the killing, investigators identified Ricardo's own brother, 34-year-old Ricky Salazar, as the primary suspect.
The conflict that led to Ricardo's death is believed to have stemmed from Ricky's desire to store stolen items at his brother's residence. Ricardo, described as a person with a big heart, was known for his willingness to help his brother, despite warnings from his daughters about his precarious lifestyle.
The pursuit of justice was heavily driven by Ricardo's teenage daughters, Sisali and Versaili. They tirelessly searched for their uncle, distributing wanted posters and actively seeking information. Their efforts, along with a crucial tip to the U.S. Marshals, led authorities to a person suspected of concealing Ricky. The intense search for Ricky concluded on September 30, 2021, after a high-speed chase, a carjacking, and a crash.
Following his capture, Ricky Salazar faced charges of second-degree murder and domestic battery for his brother's death. He was also charged with aggravated robbery, criminal possession of a weapon, and cocaine possession for a separate incident. He was subsequently booked into the Wyandotte County Jail with a bond set at $250,000. The Kansas City, Kansas Police Department's Major Case Unit continued to investigate the homicide.
