In the spring of 2018, the life of 15-year-old Jaylyn Wheeler was tragically cut short on a street in Southeast Washington, D.C. A student at Ballou High School, Wheeler was walking home on the afternoon of May 16th when he was shot multiple times in the 600 block of Alabama Avenue. The incident occurred in an alley across the street from Martin Luther King Jr. Elementary School.
He was rushed to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.
The investigation into Wheeler's death quickly focused on a fellow teenager. Police identified 16-year-old Daquan Gray as the suspect and issued a warrant for his arrest on a charge of first-degree murder while armed. Authorities stated that the shooting was the result of an ongoing dispute between two groups of students at their high school. Just days after the warrant was issued, Gray turned himself in to the police. He was subsequently charged as an adult.
In the years following the shooting, the legal proceedings against Daquan Gray have been ongoing. He pleaded not guilty to the charges. At one point, a plea offer was extended by the prosecution, which Gray rejected. The case has also seen complications regarding DNA evidence. The defense sought to have the case dismissed due to the alleged mishandling and contamination of DNA samples, a motion that was ultimately denied by the judge. Jaylyn Wheeler's mother, speaking at a vigil, expressed her heartbreak and pleaded for an end to the violence that took her son's life, a young man who had his whole future ahead of him.
