In the waning days of November 2018, a burst of gunfire shattered the evening calm in a residential Northeast Washington, D.C. neighborhood. On Monday, November 26th, at approximately 6:34 p.m., police responded to the 800 block of Taylor Street NE after reports of gunshots. Upon their arrival, they discovered an adult male suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.
The man was identified as 37-year-old Malik Muhammad of Bowie, Maryland.
Emergency services rushed him to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries. For five days, he fought for his life, but ultimately succumbed to his injuries on Saturday, December 1, 2018. His death was one of three separate fatal incidents that occurred in the District on the same day.
Detectives from the Metropolitan Police Department's Homicide Branch launched an investigation into the fatal shooting. Several months later, their efforts led to a significant development in the case. On Monday, April 8, 2019, authorities arrested a suspect in connection with Muhammad's death.
Members of the Capital Regional Fugitive Task Force, acting on a D.C. Superior Court arrest warrant, took 34-year-old Reginald Turner of Capitol Heights, Maryland, into custody. Turner was subsequently charged with First Degree Murder While Armed for his alleged role in the shooting that ended Malik Muhammad's life.
