In the early hours of a Sunday in Washington, D.C., a dispute escalated into deadly violence, claiming the life of David Elijah Brandon. The 30-year-old man was fatally shot on February 24, 2019, following a large fight that broke out just before 1:30 a.m. outside the Safari DC Lounge located in the 4300 block of Georgia Avenue, Northwest. When officers from the Fourth District of the Metropolitan Police Department arrived at the scene in the Petworth neighborhood, they discovered evidence of a
shooting but no victims.
Shortly after the initial police response, two men arrived at a local hospital with gunshot wounds. One of these men was David Elijah Brandon, who had sustained a life-threatening injury. Despite the efforts of medical staff, he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at 2:11 a.m. The second victim, who was not identified, was also treated for a gunshot wound to the body. In the days that followed, investigators released surveillance footage showing four 'persons of interest' and a vehicle they believed were connected to the incident as they sought the public's help.
The investigation led to a significant development several months later. On July 17, 2019, the Capital Area Regional Fugitive Task Force arrested 31-year-old Brandon Randall of Churchtown, Maryland. He was charged with first-degree murder while armed in connection with the fatal shooting of David Elijah Brandon.
In November 2022, Brandon Randall pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of second-degree murder while armed. During the sentencing hearing, family and friends of David Elijah Brandon gave emotional victim impact statements, remembering him as a loving father and a vibrant individual. In June 2023, a judge sentenced Randall to 24 years in prison, followed by five years of supervised release, bringing a measure of closure to a case that began with a late-night altercation and ended in a tragic loss of life.
