Just after midnight on July 8, 2019, a burst of gunfire shattered the night outside a convenience store in the 3900 block of Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue SW in Washington, D.C. In the chaotic moments that followed, four people were found suffering from gunshot wounds. Among them was 22-year-old Anfernee Vernon Walker of Southeast, DC. Emergency services rushed all four victims to local hospitals for treatment.
Despite the efforts of medical personnel, Anfernee Vernon Walker succumbed to
his injuries and was pronounced dead later that day. The shooting also claimed the life of another victim, 20-year-old Timothy Richardson, who died from his injuries weeks after the incident. The other two victims were treated for their wounds. A police report indicated that as many as 25 shots were fired during the violent encounter.
In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, detectives from the Metropolitan Police Department's Homicide Branch launched an investigation into the fatal event. As of July 2019, no arrests had been made in connection with the shooting, and no suspects had been publicly identified. The police department offered a reward of up to $25,000 for any information that would lead to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for the homicide. The investigation into the deaths of Anfernee Vernon Walker and Timothy Richardson remains ongoing.
