On July 20, 2019, John Fenner Thomas, a 30-year-old resident of Northeast, Washington, DC, was fatally shot in the 2600 block of Sherman Avenue, Northwest. The incident occurred around 10:25 PM when members of the Third District responded to reports of gunshots in the area. Upon canvassing the scene, officers discovered that Thomas had been transported to a local hospital with multiple gunshot wounds.
