On a tumultuous day in April 2015, 48-year-old Ronald Anderson of Washington, D.C., embarked on a violent crime spree that spanned from the nation's capital to Maryland. The tragic chain of events began on the afternoon of April 9th, his birthday, when Anderson abducted his girlfriend from a street in Washington D.C. He then drove to the U.S. Census Bureau headquarters in Suitland, Maryland, where he became involved in an altercation that caught the attention of a security guard.
In the ensuing confrontation, Anderson fatally shot the guard.
The incident triggered a massive police response, and a high-speed chase ensued as Anderson fled back into Washington D.C. The pursuit came to a dramatic and violent end in a shootout with police. During the exchange of gunfire, Anderson was critically wounded. He was taken into custody and transported to a local hospital for medical treatment. Though his injuries were severe, he survived. In the aftermath, Ronald Anderson was charged with a litany of offenses, including murder and kidnapping. By October of 2016, he had been indicted by a federal grand jury but was still reported to be undergoing medical treatment while detained.
In an entirely separate and earlier incident, a 25-year-old man, also named Ronald Anderson, lost his life to gun violence in Washington, D.C. In the early morning hours of Saturday, July 1, 2006, at approximately 12:15 a.m., Anderson was shot and killed in the 2000 block of Maryland Avenue, NE. The circumstances surrounding his death remain unclear, and the case has grown cold over the years. To date, no arrests have been made in connection with his murder, and the Metropolitan Police Department continues to seek information from the public regarding any potential suspects or leads that might bring resolution to the case.
