In the summer of 2019, a burst of gunfire shattered the evening calm in a Southeast Washington, D.C. neighborhood, leaving a young man's life cut tragically short. Devin Dwayne Smith, a 20-year-old Black male from the area, was fatally wounded on Monday, August 12, 2019. The shooting occurred at approximately 8:25 p.m. in the 2400 block of Elvans Road, Southeast.
Responding to reports of a shooting, officers from the Metropolitan Police Department's Seventh District arrived to find Smith
suffering from a gunshot wound. D.C. Fire and Emergency Medical Services personnel transported him to a local hospital for treatment of his life-threatening injuries. Despite the efforts of medical staff, Devin Dwayne Smith succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead.
The Metropolitan Police Department's Homicide Branch is actively investigating the fatal shooting. In the immediate aftermath, authorities appealed to the public for assistance, offering a reward of up to $25,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for Smith's death.
As of now, there have been no public announcements regarding any arrests made or suspects identified in connection with the homicide of Devin Dwayne Smith. The investigation remains ongoing as his family and community await answers in the search for justice.
