On the evening of March 20, 2020, a vibrant life was tragically cut short in the Fairlawn neighborhood of Washington, D.C. Lagloria Marquita Brinkley, a 36-year-old Black/African American woman, was shot and killed at approximately 9:54 PM in the 1900 block of 16th Street, SE. The Metropolitan Police Department promptly launched a homicide investigation, seeking assistance from the public to piece together the events of that fatal night.
Born in Washington, D.C.
on January 28, 1984, to Gloria Dean Brinkley and James Sanders, Lagloria was known for her vivacious and outspoken spirit. A graduate of Anacostia High School, she found joy in caring for the children of her family and friends. She cherished spending time with her loved ones, often engaging in lively debates and sharing jokes. Her presence brought laughter to those around her, and she was deeply loved by her family, including her nephew Blake, with whom she shared a special bond. In the time leading up to her death, Lagloria had been attending church and bible study with her mother and aunt.
Following an extensive investigation into her death, police identified a suspect. Mequan Carthens, a resident of Southeast D.C., was arrested and subsequently charged with first-degree murder while armed in connection with the shooting of Lagloria Brinkley. The arrest marked a significant development in the case, bringing a measure of resolution to a community shaken by the violent loss of one of its own.
