On a late Friday night in Southeast Washington, D.C., the life of 19-year-old Nya Howard-Reynolds was tragically cut short. On November 30, 2018, police responded to a call about a shooting at a residence on 57th Place SE. Inside, they found Nya suffering from a gunshot wound. She was rushed to a local hospital but was pronounced dead shortly after her arrival.
The young woman, who was from Capitol Heights, Maryland, was one of ten people present in the townhouse at the time of the incident.
The events that unfolded that night were chaotic and confusing. According to witnesses at the scene, the gunshot was heard coming from a bedroom in the house. When they entered the room, they discovered Nya lying on the floor. The initial claim from the man in whose bedroom the shooting occurred, 22-year-old Robert Theodore Smith, was that Nya had shot herself. However, the investigation by the Metropolitan Police Department pointed in a different direction.
Within a few days, on December 3, 2018, Robert Theodore Smith was arrested and charged with second-degree murder while armed in connection with Nya Howard-Reynolds's death. During legal proceedings, it was revealed that Smith was the first person to leave the scene of the crime. His defense attorney argued that Smith had no motive to harm Nya, as they did not know each other. Despite this, a judge found probable cause to move forward with the charges against Smith, and he was held without bond.
