In the autumn of 2015, the life of a promising 36-year-old female architect, Desiree Cooper, was tragically cut short in what police determined to be a murder-suicide. She had relocated to Washington, D.C., about a year prior, purchasing and renovating a rowhouse on Tennessee Avenue NE, embracing the city as her new home where she was known for her active lifestyle that included running marathons and volunteering.
On a Monday afternoon in early November, concerned relatives requested a
welfare check at Cooper's residence. Responding officers made a grim discovery, finding Cooper and a 37-year-old man, John Robinson, deceased inside the home, both having sustained fatal gunshot wounds. The investigation that followed led detectives to conclude that Robinson, a gym trainer with whom Cooper had been in a relationship, had shot and killed her before turning the gun on himself.
The motive for the violent act remained unclear to Cooper's parents, who described their daughter as someone who lived life to the fullest. They were aware of her relationship with Robinson, whom she had met at a local gym, and had even tried to assist him with furthering his education.
