A New Year's celebration turned into a tragedy, claiming the life of 18-year-old Ashlei Hinds, a promising college student from Clinton, Maryland. The young woman, a freshman at Louisiana State University, was home for the holidays and attending a party at an Embassy Suites hotel in the Friendship Heights neighborhood of Washington, D.C., when she was fatally shot in the early hours of January 1, 2024. Her death marked the first homicide of the new year in the nation's capital.
