On January 1, 2024, 18-year-old Ashlei Hinds was fatally shot at a New Year's Eve party held at the Embassy Suites Hotel in the Friendship Heights area of Washington, D.C. The incident occurred around 1:20 a.m. on the seventh floor of the hotel, specifically in room 718, marking the first homicide reported in the District in 2024.
