On the night of Friday, September 1, 2023, 19-year-old Mikeya Ferguson was fatally shot in Washington, D.C. The incident occurred at approximately 11:56 p.m. in the 1300 block of 7th Street, Northwest. Ferguson was with her 15-year-old cousin, Lashani Scott, and a friend, 18-year-old Cle'shai Perry, when the shooting took place. According to family, the three were sitting on a playground when dozens of gunshots were fired.
The hail of bullets struck all three young women as they tried to flee. Police officers from the Third District responded to reports of the shooting and found the three victims. Emergency services transported them to local hospitals for treatment. Tragically, both Mikeya Ferguson and Cle'shai Perry succumbed to their injuries and were pronounced dead. Scott, Ferguson's cousin, was critically injured but survived.
She sustained multiple gunshot wounds, including two to the neck and one in the back, resulting in a fractured backbone.
The family of Mikeya Ferguson described her as the oldest of seven siblings who loved school and having a good time. In the wake of the shooting, her family expressed immense grief and frustration over the gun violence in the city. They reported that in the chaos and pain following the incident, they had not been immediately allowed to see their daughter's body.
The Metropolitan Police Department's Homicide Branch is investigating the shooting. At the time of the incident, no suspects had been publicly identified, and no arrests had been made. The police have appealed to the public for assistance, offering a reward of up to $50,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for the homicides.
