In the early morning hours of a summer day in Washington, D.C., a woman named Laura Smith, who was also known as Liz, was resting on a park bench in the historic Logan Circle. The city was just beginning to stir, the quiet of the pre-dawn moments hanging in the air. It was in this peaceful setting, at approximately 5:13 a.m. on Monday, June 28, 2004, that she was the victim of a brutal assault. The attack left her with fatal injuries from which she would not recover.
