In the early morning hours of Sunday, October 29, 2023, the festive atmosphere of a Halloween party in Dermott, Arkansas, was shattered by a violent disturbance. At approximately 2 a.m., the Dermott Police Department received a 911 call reporting trouble at a gathering located at 302 North Shepherd Street. Upon their arrival, officers were met with a chaotic scene, with numerous people scattered outside the building where the party had been underway.
Amid the confusion, law enforcement
discovered 27-year-old Joshua Thompson lying on the ground next to his vehicle. He had sustained multiple gunshot wounds. Emergency medical services were dispatched to the scene, and Thompson was quickly transported to McGehee Hospital in a desperate attempt to save his life. Despite the efforts of medical personnel, Joshua Thompson succumbed to his severe injuries and was pronounced dead at approximately 3 a.m.
In the aftermath of the shooting, the Dermott Police Department requested the assistance of the Arkansas State Police to lead the investigation into the homicide. Special agents from the Criminal Investigation Division were dispatched to Dermott to process the crime scene and interview potential witnesses. As of late 2023, authorities had not publicly identified any suspects in the shooting death of Joshua Thompson, and no arrests had been announced in connection with the case.
