In the early evening of April 3, 2020, at approximately 6:50 p.m., tragedy struck in the 3400 block of 22nd Street, Southeast, in Washington, D.C. It was here that 28-year-old David Deandre Young of Clinton, Maryland, was found suffering from a gunshot wound. Officers from the Seventh District of the Metropolitan Police Department had responded to the scene following reports of a shooting. Emergency services arrived and transported Young to a local hospital in an attempt to save his life.
Despite these efforts, he was pronounced dead.
The investigation into the shooting revealed that another individual, a juvenile male, had also sustained a non-life-threatening gunshot wound during the incident. This second victim was located at a local hospital receiving treatment.
In the months that followed, the investigation by the Metropolitan Police Department's Homicide Branch led to the identification of suspects. On August 2, 2020, officers arrested 20-year-old Wesley Scott of Southeast, D.C. He was subsequently charged with first-degree murder while armed in connection with the death of David Deandre Young.
The case continued to develop, and on August 19, 2020, a second arrest was made. Michael Benbow, a 17-year-old from Southwest, D.C., was taken into custody. He was also charged as an adult with first-degree murder while armed, marking a significant step in the ongoing investigation into the fatal shooting.
