On a Saturday evening in Southeast Washington, D.C., 71-year-old Sheila Lucas, a woman who had faced and overcome numerous challenges in her life, was fatally shot. The incident, which occurred on May 23, 2020, unfolded in the 1600 block of Savannah Street SE, where she had gone to intervene in a dispute involving her granddaughter. A dedicated matriarch, Ms. Lucas was a single mother who raised six of her own children and later adopted four more.
Her life was a testament to her resilience; she had previously survived being shot three decades prior, battled diabetes, and had recently recovered from COVID-19.
The conflict that led to her untimely death reportedly began when her granddaughter was assaulted by another woman. In a characteristic act of protection for her family, Ms. Lucas stepped in to de-escalate the situation and ensure the safety of her great-grandchildren who were also present. As she positioned herself between the arguing individuals, gunfire erupted, and a bullet struck her in the head. She was transported to a local hospital where she succumbed to her injuries. Another man was also wounded in the shooting but sustained non-life-threatening injuries.
In the wake of the shooting, the Washington, D.C. Metropolitan Police Department launched an investigation into the homicide. At the time of the initial reports, no arrests had been made, and police were seeking assistance from the public, offering a reward for any information that would lead to the apprehension and conviction of the person or persons responsible for Ms. Lucas's death.
