In the early morning hours of Wednesday, August 13, 2008, the life of a young African-American woman, Shanika Lashawn Lee, was tragically cut short in Washington, D.C. At approximately 6:35 a.m., officers from the Metropolitan Police Department were dispatched to the rear of the 3200 block of E Street, SE, following reports of a shooting. Upon their arrival, they discovered Shanika suffering from gunshot wounds.
Despite the immediate response and efforts of emergency medical personnel, she succumbed to her injuries at the scene. Sources conflict on whether she was 24 or 28 years old at the time of her death.
The investigation into Shanika's death was quickly classified as a homicide and taken over by the department's Homicide and Sexual Offenses Branch. However, the case has remained unsolved, with no arrests made and no suspects publicly identified. The circumstances leading up to the shooting have not been released to the public.
