On a Thursday afternoon in Washington, D.C., a devastating incident cut short the life of 38-year-old Sophia Johnson. On October 27, 2022, Johnson was shot and killed while inside a vehicle at the intersection of New Jersey Avenue and N Street, Northwest. The preliminary investigation revealed that the shooting appeared to be contained to the single vehicle. When Metropolitan Police Department officers arrived at the scene around 12:19 p.m., they found Johnson inside the car, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Despite the immediate response from DC Fire and Emergency Medical Services, she showed no signs of life and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The suspect in the fatal shooting was quickly identified and taken into custody on the same day. Ariel Cooper, a 39-year-old woman from Northwest, D.C., who was a passenger in the vehicle with Johnson, was arrested and charged with second-degree murder while armed. Investigators determined that Cooper and Johnson were known to each other, and it was later revealed they had been best friends for many years, since their late teens. A firearm was recovered at the scene. Family members of Johnson told police that Cooper had a history of drug use, specifically phencyclidine which would lead to altercations with Johnson.

In the ensuing legal proceedings, Ariel Cooper, also referred to as Ariel Cooper-White, initially faced a charge of second-degree murder while armed. However, in May 2023, she accepted a plea agreement and pleaded guilty to the lesser charges of voluntary manslaughter and possession of a firearm during a crime of violence. During the sentencing, the court heard emotional testimony from Johnson's family, who remembered her as a home health aide with a good heart who had fought her own battles with addiction. Cooper-White's son also spoke, highlighting the close bond between his mother and Johnson, stating that Johnson would often step in to help raise him during his mother's low points. Ultimately, a judge sentenced Ariel Cooper-White to seven years in prison for her role in the death of her best friend.
