In the pre-dawn hours of a Monday in Washington, D.C., a 49-year-old African-American woman named Gloria Banks began her daily routine, a walk that would tragically be her last. On August 29, 2005, at approximately 5:15 a.m., in the 1900 block of 14th Street, Northwest, she was the victim of a brutal and fatal stabbing. The Metropolitan Police Department responded to the scene to find a crime of shocking violence.
