On a Sunday afternoon in Washington, D.C., a 39-year-old African-American woman named Ivy Tonett Smith was waiting at a bus stop in the 2800 block of Alabama Avenue SE when her life was tragically cut short. On that day, March 6, 2016, gunfire erupted from a passing vehicle, and Smith, an innocent bystander, was struck. She was rushed to a local hospital but ultimately succumbed to her injuries.
