In the early hours of a summer morning in Washington, D.C., the sound of gunshots shattered the quiet of the 5000 block of Bass Place, Southeast. When police arrived at approximately 1:15 a.m. on Tuesday, July 7, 2020, they discovered a grim scene. Inside a vehicle, a man and a woman were found unconscious, both suffering from gunshot wounds. Nearby, another man was also found, a victim of the same violent outburst.
The female victim was identified as 56-year-old Claudette Williams of Southeast, D.C. The two male victims were 29-year-old Marquise Lewis of Clinton, Maryland, and 20-year-old Juwan Wade of Northeast, D.C. None of them showed any signs of life, and they were pronounced dead at the scene.
The investigation into the triple homicide led to arrests in the following months. On October 20, 2020, 33-year-old Dale Benjamin of Southeast, DC, was arrested and charged with second-degree murder while armed. A second suspect, 44-year-old Jibri Qayyum, also from Southeast, DC, was arrested on February 24, 2021, and faced the same charge. It seemed as though the path to justice for Claudette Williams and the other victims was beginning to unfold as the two men were brought into the legal system to face the accusations against them.
However, the case took an unexpected turn in April 2021. During a preliminary hearing, a D.C. Superior Court judge dismissed the murder charges against both Dale Benjamin and Jibri Qayyum. The judge ruled that there was insufficient evidence to proceed to trial. Attorneys for the defendants argued that prosecutors had withheld evidence, including a 911 call. Furthermore, a crucial piece of surveillance video surfaced, showing a muzzle flash originating from the victims' vehicle, which introduced questions about who initiated the shooting. With the charges dropped, the case was left without a clear resolution, though the possibility remains for prosecutors to refile charges if new evidence comes to light. The investigation into the deaths of Claudette Williams, Marquise Lewis, and Juwan Wade remains open.
