On the evening of April 7, 2020, a young woman's life was tragically cut short in a senseless act of violence in Southeast Washington, D.C. The victim was 21-year-old Brea Moon, a female resident of District Heights, Maryland. What began as an ordinary night ended in a hail of gunfire that left a community reeling and a family shattered.
The events leading to Moon's death began to unfold shortly before 10:30 p.m. at a BP gas station located at 4101 Alabama Avenue SE.
Moon was a passenger in a gray sedan that pulled into the station. At the same time, individuals in a stolen white vehicle were also at the gas station. When the gray sedan departed, the white vehicle deliberately followed it. A short time later, the white vehicle pulled alongside the gray sedan, and multiple gunshots were fired into it. One of the bullets struck Brea Moon, inflicting a fatal wound. The shooting occurred in the 3900 block of Alabama Avenue, Southeast. Although first responders from the Prince George's County Police Department found Moon inside the vehicle on Suitland Road in Maryland and transported her to a local hospital, she succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced dead.
The investigation into Brea Moon's murder was handled by the Metropolitan Police Department's Homicide Branch. Their efforts led to the identification of several suspects. In June 2020, authorities arrested 16-year-old Michael Mason and 19-year-old Daquan Jones. Mason was charged as an adult with first-degree murder while armed, not only in connection with Moon's death but also in other violent crimes, including the murder of 18-year-old Antwuan Roach in a separate incident in May 2020. Daquan Jones, later referred to as Dajuan Jones, was also charged with first-degree murder while armed. A third suspect, Charles Hill, was also charged for his involvement in Moon's death as part of a larger indictment against members of a violent crew.
The legal proceedings brought a measure of justice for Brea Moon and her loved ones. Michael Mason pleaded guilty to two charges of second-degree murder for the deaths of Brea Moon and Antwuan Roach and on October 31, 2025, was sentenced to 28 years and eight months in prison. For their roles in Moon's murder, DaJuan Jones and Charles Hill both pleaded guilty to one count of second-degree murder while armed. On September 3, 2025, they were each sentenced to 23 years in prison, to be followed by five years of supervised release. The government's evidence established that on the night of the murder, Jones was the driver of the stolen white vehicle, and Hill was a passenger.
