In the early morning hours of October 7, 2021, 33-year-old Nikiesha Thomas, a dedicated city employee in Washington D.C., was fatally shot while sitting in her parked car outside a Planet Fitness in the 3200 block of Pennsylvania Avenue SE. The tragic event unfolded around 9:25 a.m. in the bustling parking lot of the Penn Branch shopping center. Thomas, who worked for the D.C.
Office of the State Superintendent of Education's Strong Start DC Early Intervention Program, was taken to a hospital where she was pronounced dead. Her work was focused on providing services to infants and toddlers with disabilities and developmental delays.
The suspect in her death was identified as her 36-year-old ex-boyfriend, Antoine Oliver of Fort Washington, Maryland. Investigators quickly determined the homicide was domestic in nature. Tragically, just three days before the shooting, Thomas had sought and obtained a protective order against Oliver. However, law enforcement had been unable to serve him with the order. Deputies in Prince George's County had spoken with Oliver by phone, and he had agreed to meet them to accept the service of the order on the very day of the shooting, but that meeting never occurred.
Following the shooting, Oliver fled the scene, sparking a police search. Hours later, around 12:30 p.m., he carjacked a vehicle in Largo, Maryland, and led police on a chase back into the District of Columbia. As officers closed in on the stolen vehicle at East Capitol Street and Minnesota Avenue in Northeast D.C., Antoine Oliver took his own life.
Nikiesha Thomas was remembered by her family as a beautiful person and a leader who organized family gatherings. She was a mother to a 10-year-old daughter and was making plans to buy a house. She had earned a bachelor's degree in criminal justice from Clark Atlanta University and a master's degree in social work from the University of Maryland, graduating with honors from both institutions. Her untimely death was a profound loss for her family, friends, and the community she served.
