In the early morning hours of Tuesday, June 9, 2020, a 21-year-old woman named Kamonie Edwards was fatally shot in the Anacostia neighborhood of Washington, D.C. The incident occurred at approximately 1:29 a.m. in the 1600 block of W Street, SE. Officers from the Metropolitan Police Department responded to reports of a shooting and found Ms. Edwards unconscious and suffering from a gunshot wound. D.C.
Fire and Emergency Medical Services transported her to a local hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
Although her family had moved away from Anacostia due to violence, Edwards, who had attended Anacostia High School and was an aspiring caterer, often returned to the neighborhood to spend time with friends. On the night of the shooting, she had sent her mother a text message, their code to let her know everything was okay, just before 12:30 a.m. Less than an hour later, she was caught in the crossfire of a shootout.
Investigators believe Kamonie Edwards was not the intended target of the shooting. Police reported that 46 shots were fired between two rival groups in the street. One of those bullets struck Edwards in the head. Authorities have linked a casing from this shooting to another homicide that occurred a few weeks later, which they attribute to an ongoing gang dispute in the area.
As of the latest available reports, no arrests have been made in connection with the death of Kamonie Edwards. The Metropolitan Police Department is actively investigating the homicide and has offered a reward of up to $25,000 for any information that leads to the arrest and conviction of the individuals responsible. They are urging anyone with information to come forward and have provided contact information for their Homicide Branch and an anonymous text tip line.
