On the evening of March 10, 2022, in Washington, D.C., 30-year-old Deshaun Cupid, a female, was fatally shot while sitting in the driver's seat of her gray Infiniti sedan. The incident occurred at approximately 6:03 p.m. in the 700 block of 18th Street, Northeast. Tragically, her two young children, ages one and two, were in the back seat of the vehicle at the time of the shooting but were unharmed.
Emergency services responded to reports of gunshots and transported Cupid to a local hospital, where she succumbed to her injuries.
The investigation into Cupid's death led to the arrest of 20-year-old Dominique Brown-Young on June 3, 2022. He was subsequently charged with first-degree murder while armed. During legal proceedings, prosecutors alleged that Cupid was not the intended target of the shooting. It was suggested that the actual target was her boyfriend. Surveillance footage reportedly captured Brown-Young and another unidentified suspect in the moments leading up to the shooting. The footage showed one of the suspects receiving a phone call and then hurrying out of a building. A person of interest was allegedly on the phone, directing the suspects toward Cupid's vehicle. Shortly after, seven gunshots were heard.
In court, Brown-Young's defense attorney argued a lack of evidence connecting him to the firearm or the victim. However, the prosecution presented identifications of Brown-Young from the surveillance video by his mother and other witnesses, as well as a self-identification by Brown-Young himself. The case against Brown-Young proceeded, and a judge found probable cause to move to trial. Dominique Brown-Young later pleaded not guilty to the charges against him, which included first-degree murder, assault with a dangerous weapon against a minor, and firearm possession. He rejected a plea deal that would have reduced the charge to second-degree murder.
