On a Mother's Day evening, 10-year-old Arianna Davis, a female, was tragically caught in the crossfire of a violent shootout in Washington, D.C. She was riding in a car with her family in the 3700 block of Hayes Street NE, returning from a holiday celebration, when their vehicle was trapped between groups exchanging gunfire. A stray bullet struck Arianna, who was sitting in the backseat. Her family rushed her to a nearby fire station, and from there she was transported to a hospital.
Three days later, on May 17, 2023, Arianna succumbed to her injuries.
The senseless act of violence that cut short a young life sparked an intensive investigation by the Metropolitan Police Department. The shooting was described as a barrage of gunfire, with witnesses reporting hearing over 50 shots. Authorities believe Arianna and her family were innocent bystanders, unintentionally caught in a dispute between rival groups. The incident drew widespread condemnation and highlighted the issue of gun violence in the city.
In the months that followed, investigators made several arrests in connection with Arianna's death. In September 2023, police apprehended 19-year-old Koran Gregory of Southeast D.C. and charged him with first-degree murder. The investigation continued, leading to the arrest of a second suspect, 19-year-old Dallas McKinney of Southeast D.C., in January 2024. A third suspect, 25-year-old Charles Edward Owens of Southeast D.C., was arrested and charged with first-degree murder in March 2024. Police indicated that they believe others were involved and that the investigation is ongoing.
