In the early morning hours of a Tuesday in Douglas, Georgia, a domestic argument tragically escalated, leaving a father dead and his son facing murder charges. Just before 2:00 a.m. on December 10, 2024, authorities were called to a residence in the 100 block of Park Place Road, where they discovered 45-year-old Israel Rivera Cruz, a Hispanic male, deceased from multiple gunshot wounds.
His wife, 31-year-old Jasmine Gonzalez, was also found at the scene with a non-life-threatening gunshot wound.
Investigations by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation and the Coffee County Sheriff's Office revealed a harrowing sequence of events. An argument had broken out between Israel Rivera Cruz and Jasmine Gonzalez. At some point during the dispute, their 17-year-old son, Miguel Gonzalez, intervened, approaching his father with a firearm. A struggle for the weapon ensued between father and son.
Miguel Gonzalez ultimately regained control of the gun and shot his father several times. During the altercation, Jasmine Gonzalez was also unintentionally shot. She was transported to a local hospital for treatment and was subsequently released.
Miguel Gonzalez was arrested at the scene and has been charged with aggravated assault, felony murder, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime. He was booked into the Coffee County Jail. The body of Israel Rivera Cruz was sent to the GBI Medical Examiner's Office for an autopsy. The investigation into the incident is ongoing.
