Jabyo Lamar Bell, a 30-year-old Black male from Waycross, was killed on December 15, 2019, after violence broke out at Amberwood Apartments on East Baker Highway in Douglas. That afternoon, police were called to the complex on reports of shots fired, and when officers arrived they found Bell behind one of the apartment buildings with multiple gunshot wounds. He was taken to Coffee Regional Medical Center, but he did not survive. In the confusion that followed, officers also learned that a second man, Onterio “Mucho Gotti” Wilson, 27, of Douglas, had been dropped off separately at the same hospital with multiple gunshot wounds of his own, turning the shooting into a tangled investigation from the very first hours.

At first, the case looked like a deadly apartment complex shooting with many unanswered questions. Investigators worked through the scene and, within days, began making arrests tied not only to the gunfire but also to what happened afterward. On December 19, 2019, Wilson was arrested and charged with tampering with evidence and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. Authorities said those charges were connected to Bell's death, and Wilson remained in the Coffee County Detention Center. Around the same time, investigators were also seeking another man, Abraham “Abe” Gordon of Douglas, who was wanted on a tampering with evidence charge connected to the case.

The investigation deepened over the next two months. On February 26, 2020, detectives added a voluntary manslaughter charge against Wilson, formally accusing the wounded survivor of criminal responsibility in Bell's death. Later that same day, Gordon was stopped by a Hazlehurst police officer during a traffic stop after the officer saw the driver holding a cell phone. According to the account released afterward, the driver gave a false name and date of birth, then ran on foot before being captured. Police later identified him as Gordon, the man Douglas detectives had been looking for in connection with the killing. He was jailed in Jeff Davis County while awaiting extradition to Coffee County on the tampering with evidence warrant.

What emerged from the public record was the story of a shooting that did not end with the discovery of Bell's body. It unfolded into a broader criminal case involving the man who was also shot, additional felony charges, and another suspect accused of interfering with evidence rather than pulling the trigger. Bell's death left behind a case marked by shifting roles, where the injured were not simply victims, and where investigators believed the truth of what happened at Amberwood Apartments was clouded by actions taken after the gunfire stopped. Publicly available reporting on the case details the arrests and charges against Wilson and Gordon, but it does not clearly show a later trial or conviction in the materials available online.
