In the early evening of October 5, 2020, the life of 15-year-old Ja’rique Johan Brown was tragically cut short in Douglas, Georgia. Authorities responded to a call on Creekwood Road around 6:00 p.m. and discovered the young male deceased in the roadway from an apparent gunshot wound. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation was called in to assist the Coffee County Sheriff's Office with the homicide investigation.
The investigation quickly led to the identification of two suspects. Within a couple of days, a 16-year-old juvenile was taken into custody and charged with felony murder. Shortly after, an arrest warrant was issued for 18-year-old Savionte Torek Traylor, also of Douglas. Traylor turned himself in to the Coffee County Jail.
The investigation revealed that Traylor and the juvenile had arranged to sell a handgun to Brown for $300. During this transaction, Traylor shot and killed Brown. Traylor later claimed he acted in self-defense, alleging that Brown had produced another weapon. However, investigators found no gun near Brown's body. The prosecution pointed to Traylor's conflicting stories and his attempts to hide his vehicle after the shooting as evidence against his self-defense claim.
In June 2024, a Coffee County jury convicted Savionte Traylor on charges of felony murder, furnishing a pistol to a minor, and tampering with evidence. He was acquitted of a murder by aggravated assault charge. Traylor was subsequently sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole after serving 30 years. The case against the second individual charged in Brown's death is set to be tried at a later date.
