In a city grappling with violence, the life of 15-year-old Niomi Russell was tragically cut short on a Sunday night in Washington, D.C. The female teenager was visiting friends in her old Southeast neighborhood on April 14, 2024, a place her family had moved from only three days prior in search of a safer environment. Just after 10:45 p.m. in the 2400 block of Elvans Road SE, the sounds of gunshots pierced the night.
According to the Metropolitan Police Department, individuals in a
vehicle opened fire on a group of people who were outside. Niomi was among them. After the shots were fired, she ran into a nearby apartment building where she collapsed from her gunshot wounds. Officers who were in the vicinity and heard the gunshots discovered the wounded teenager inside the building. Despite their efforts, Niomi was pronounced dead at the scene.
Her mother, Precious Fernandez, described her daughter as a kindhearted and intelligent ninth-grade student at KIPP D.C. Legacy College Preparatory who earned good grades. She believes Niomi was an innocent bystander and not the intended target of the shooting. The investigation into her death is ongoing, and as of now, no arrests have been made. Authorities have indicated that multiple firearms were used in the attack and are searching for a silver SUV with a black top that is believed to have been involved. The Metropolitan Police Department is offering a reward of up to $25,000 for information that leads to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for Niomi Russell's death.
