Summary based on 9 sources
Daniyah Ford was a bright, funny, and caring 17-year-old with a promising future ahead of her. A senior at Coolidge High School in Washington, D.C., she was a talented and dedicated student-athlete. Daniyah was a key player on the school's championship girls' basketball team, which had won the citywide championship for two consecutive years. Her coach and teammates remembered her energy, toughness, and eagerness to play, recalling how she would say, "Coach D, I'm ready today put me in ok." Beyond the basketball court, Daniyah was known for her kind heart, quick wit, and sense of humor. Her principal, Sementhe Bright, described her as having a "warmth and kind spirit" that "left a lasting impression on those who knew her." A participant in the NAF Academy of Health Sciences, she was considering a future as a dental hygienist or a firefighter. Daniyah, who lived in Hyattsville, Maryland, was an active member of her church and was remembered by a family friend as someone who was "everybody's friend," with whom "no one has a bad memory."

The evening of Saturday, October 3, 2026, was tragically her last. At approximately 6:54 p.m., gunfire erupted in the 3700 block of New Hampshire Avenue NW, near the Petworth Metro station. Daniyah and an adult male were both struck by bullets. When Fourth District officers from the Metropolitan Police Department arrived, they found both victims suffering from gunshot wounds. According to a police report, Daniyah was shot in the leg and abdomen, while the man was shot in the upper leg. Emergency services transported them to a local hospital. Both were conscious and breathing when they were found, but despite all lifesaving efforts, Daniyah succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced dead. The man she was with suffered serious injuries.

The investigation into Daniyah's murder was immediately launched by the Metropolitan Police Department. Detectives canvassed the area, recovering five shell casings from the scene. Several parked cars were also reported to have been damaged by the gunfire. Witnesses told police they saw two suspects fleeing the area in a black car, possibly a Honda Accord, heading northbound on New Hampshire Avenue. A car matching that description was later reported to have been in a crash, but the suspects were not found. Police have not released a motive for the shooting, and it is believed Daniyah was not the intended target.

The loss of Daniyah devastated her family, friends, and the entire Coolidge High School community. Tributes poured in on social media from across the D.C., Maryland, and Virginia area, including from rival basketball programs, all united in grief and support for her family. Her father, Dominique Lee, remembered his "one and only baby girl" who loved God, church, and making people smile. Her best friend recalled they had just been talking about their upcoming prom and a concert they planned to attend. The family's pain was compounded by the fact that they had lost another relative to gun violence just a few years prior.

In the days and weeks that followed, the community rallied to support Daniyah's loved ones and honor her memory. A GoFundMe was organized by a colleague of Daniyah's mother, Danyelle Ford, to help with funeral expenses and allow her time off from work to grieve. A memorial fundraiser and benefit concert featuring GoGo musicians was held at Sycamore & Oak in Southeast D.C., where attendees wore purple, Daniyah's favorite color. At a vigil, family and friends released three doves and prayed, remembering a life "filled with promise, purpose, dreams and possibilities."

As of October 2026, the investigation into Daniyah Ford's homicide remains active and ongoing. Her family has publicly pleaded for the people responsible to turn themselves in. The Metropolitan Police Department offers a reward of up to $25,000 for information that leads to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for her death. Anyone with information is urged to call the police at (202) 727-9099 or text the department's tip line at 50411.
