In the winter of 2014, the life of a young woman from Southeast Washington, D.C. was tragically cut short. Nineteen-year-old Tykia Dickerson, a Black female, was found suffering from a gunshot wound on the evening of Thursday, February 27th. The incident occurred around 8:34 p.m. in the 3600 block of Jay Street in Northeast D.C., where officers discovered her on the sidewalk.
Emergency services transported her to a local hospital, but she succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced dead.
The investigation into the shooting quickly pointed towards a domestic dispute. Authorities identified 19-year-old Daquan Hendrix of Hyattsville, Maryland, as the suspect in Tykia's murder. A warrant was issued for his arrest, and members of the Capital Area Regional Task Force began working to locate him. The task force, which included U.S. Marshals and FBI agents, had been investigating the case for about a week and a half and were monitoring multiple locations connected to Hendrix.
On the morning of Tuesday, March 18, 2014, the search for Hendrix came to a dramatic and fatal conclusion. Acting on tips, officers surrounded a residence at 77 K Street NW where they believed Hendrix was hiding. As law enforcement closed in to execute the arrest warrant, Hendrix fled out the back of the building and opened fire on the officers. In the ensuing exchange of gunfire, Daquan Hendrix was shot. He was transported to a hospital where he was pronounced dead. No police officers were injured during the incident. With the death of the sole suspect, the Metropolitan Police Department considered the case closed.
