In the early hours of a Tuesday morning in Washington, D.C., a sequence of events unfolded that would end in the tragic death of 30-year-old Nurudeen Thomas. On July 21, 2020, at approximately 5:04 a.m., officers from the Metropolitan Police Department responded to a report of a shooting in the 4100 block of 14th Street, Northwest. Upon their arrival, they discovered a male victim, later identified as Nurudeen Thomas of Greenbelt, Maryland, suffering from a gunshot wound.
Emergency services transported him to a local hospital, but his life could not be saved.
The investigation into Thomas's death soon pointed to a robbery gone wrong. Court documents revealed a chilling narrative pieced together from surveillance footage. The footage showed Thomas entering the rear passenger side of a four-door Infiniti. Shortly after, two suspects approached the vehicle, opened the rear doors, and a gunshot was heard. Thomas then fell out of the car, and the suspects got into the vehicle, which then fled the scene. A crucial piece of evidence was Thomas's cell phone, which was missing from the scene. Call records showed that the last five calls to and from his phone were connected to a number belonging to Dijon Williams, a senior and wide receiver for the Georgetown University football team.
This lead proved to be a significant breakthrough in the case. On September 28, 2020, Dijon Williams was arrested in his home state of Georgia by U.S. Marshals. The investigation further revealed that he was allegedly part of a group of at least four individuals involved in the fatal robbery. Subsequently, two other suspects were identified and arrested. On June 1, 2021, a 22-year-old male and a 23-year-old male, both from Lawrenceville, Georgia, were taken into custody and charged with first-degree murder. One of these men was later identified as Daivion Williams. The third suspect, 23-year-old Steven Washington of Stone Mountain, Georgia, was arrested on October 20, 2022. All three men, Dijon Williams, Daivion Williams, and Steven Washington, were charged with first-degree murder while armed, conspiracy, and other related offenses in connection with the death of Nurudeen Thomas.
