In the late hours of an autumn evening in Washington, D.C., the life of 41-year-old Eugene Miller was tragically cut short. On October 9, 2020, at approximately 11:19 p.m., the sounds of gunshots echoed through the 2400 block of Elvans Road, SE. When officers from the Metropolitan Police Department arrived at the scene, they found Eugene Miller suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.
Despite their efforts, he was pronounced dead at the location.
The investigation into Miller's death led authorities to a suspect. On December 29, 2020, police arrested 29-year-old Marvin Smith in connection with the fatal shooting. Smith was subsequently charged with first-degree murder while armed. This was not Smith's first encounter with the law, as he had a prior arrest history that included charges of armed robbery and various firearm offenses.
As the case proceeded to a preliminary hearing in March 2021, further details began to emerge about the circumstances surrounding Miller's death. A detective testified that a possible motive for the shooting could have been revenge, suggesting that Smith had stolen something from Miller months prior to the incident. It was alleged that on the night of the shooting, Miller was fighting with Smith when the fatal shots were fired. However, the defense raised questions about the credibility of this witness, pointing out that they had inquired about a monetary reward for providing information.
