On a cold Friday night in Washington, D.C., tragedy struck for 30-year-old Ajaye Smith, a resident of Southeast D.C. On December 9, 2022, at approximately 9:01 p.m., the sounds of gunfire shattered the evening calm in the 3400 block of Stanton Road, Southeast. When officers from the Seventh District of the Metropolitan Police Department arrived at the scene, they found Smith suffering from apparent gunshot wounds.
Emergency medical services were dispatched to the location, but upon their
arrival, they found no signs of life. Ajaye Smith, a male, was pronounced dead at the scene from his gunshot injuries. His body was later transported to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.
Detectives from the Metropolitan Police Department's Homicide Branch are actively investigating the case as a homicide. In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, police began working to identify a suspect, and the investigation remains ongoing.
The Metropolitan Police Department has offered a reward of up to $25,000 for any information that leads to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for Smith's death. They have encouraged anyone with information to contact them directly or to submit anonymous tips through their text line. As of now, no arrests have been publicly announced in connection with the fatal shooting of Ajaye Smith.
