In the late hours of a Tuesday in Washington, D.C., the life of Demetrius Ronnell Benson, a 34-year-old Black man, was tragically cut short. On November 3, 2020, at approximately 12:00 am, officers from the Metropolitan Police Department were called to the 4500 block of Dix Street, Northeast, following reports of a shooting. Upon their arrival, they discovered a male victim suffering from a gunshot wound.
Emergency services transported him to a local hospital, but his injuries proved fatal, and he was pronounced dead.
The investigation into the homicide of Demetrius Benson, a resident of Southeast, D.C., unfolded over the following month. Law enforcement officials worked to piece together the events that led to the fatal shooting. Their efforts culminated on December 3, 2020, with the arrest of a suspect.
The individual taken into custody was 27-year-old Antoine Turner. Turner was subsequently charged with first-degree murder while armed in connection with the death of Demetrius Benson. He faced a second count of first-degree murder for the shooting death of 23-year-old Demeitri Anderson on November 29, 2020, in the 4500 block of Benning Road, Southeast. The trial for the murders of both Demetrius Benson and Demeitri Anderson has been scheduled to take place in the coming years.
