In the winter of 2020, a heart-wrenching tragedy struck Washington, D.C., with the death of 15-month-old Carmelo Duncan, a male toddler. On the evening of December 2nd, the young boy was seated in his car seat in the back of a vehicle being driven by his father. As they traveled along Southern Avenue in Southeast D.C., the car was suddenly riddled with bullets.
The attack was merciless, with assailants firing multiple rounds into the vehicle.
Carmelo was struck multiple times, sustaining fatal injuries. His 8-year-old brother, who was sitting beside him, was physically unharmed but witnessed the horrific event. First responders rushed the grievously wounded toddler to a nearby hospital, but despite their efforts, he succumbed to his injuries. The shocking death of such a young child sent waves of grief and outrage throughout the community, prompting vigils and impassioned calls for an end to gun violence.
The Metropolitan Police Department launched an intensive investigation into the targeted shooting. Authorities believed at least two individuals opened fire on the vehicle and were searching for a dark-colored SUV that was seen leaving the scene.
