On a Sunday morning in Washington, D.C., the life of 22-year-old Joseph Simmons was tragically cut short. On January 3, 2021, at approximately 11:23 a.m., gunshots echoed in the 2800 block of Alabama Avenue, Southeast. Officers from the Sixth District responded to reports of a shooting and discovered a grim scene. Joseph Simmons was found suffering from apparent gunshot wounds.
Despite the immediate response from DC Fire and Emergency Medical Services, there were no signs of life, and he was pronounced dead at the location.
The investigation into the death of the young man, a resident of Southeast, D.C., was launched by the Metropolitan Police Department's Homicide Branch. For over two months, detectives worked to piece together the events of that fatal morning. Their efforts culminated on Monday, March 8, 2021, when members of the Capital Area Regional Fugitive Task Force, acting on a D.C. Superior Court arrest warrant, apprehended a suspect.
The individual taken into custody was identified as 25-year-old Rashon Hall, also a resident of Southeast, D.C. Hall was subsequently charged with First Degree Murder while Armed. In the ensuing legal process, it was revealed that the shooting occurred at a bus stop. The prosecution asserted that Hall had shot Simmons four times with the intent to kill. Ultimately, Rashon Hall accepted a plea deal, pleading guilty to second-degree murder while armed. As a result of the agreement, he faced a sentencing range of 13 to 18 years of incarceration for his role in the death of Joseph Simmons.
