On a summer afternoon in Washington, D.C., a dispute between former friends over personal belongings escalated into a tragedy that claimed the life of 20-year-old Kendall Brown. On August 7, 2021, Brown and two companions went to an apartment on Nelson Place, Southeast, to retrieve some items from a former roommate. Inside the residence was the former roommate's boyfriend, Amard Jefferson.
A verbal argument broke out, and Jefferson, who was not initially involved, escalated the
confrontation by brandishing a firearm. In the heat of the moment, he fired the weapon, striking Brown. As her friends fled the apartment, Jefferson and his girlfriend locked the door, leaving the injured Brown inside, and escaped through the back. Jefferson disposed of the 9mm 'ghost gun' in a nearby drainpipe as he fled the scene.
Responding officers from the Metropolitan Police Department had to force their way into the apartment, where they found Brown suffering from a gunshot wound. She was transported to a local hospital, but her injuries proved fatal. The day after the shooting, authorities apprehended 22-year-old Amard Jefferson and charged him with second-degree murder while armed.
During the subsequent investigation and legal proceedings, it came to light that from jail, Jefferson had attempted to persuade his girlfriend to take the blame for the shooting through text messages and phone calls. In December 2024, a jury found Amard Jefferson guilty of second-degree murder while armed and obstruction of justice. He was later sentenced to 27 years in prison for the death of Kendall Brown.
