In the early evening of January 19, 2022, a tragic event unfolded on a street in Northwest Washington, D.C., that cut short the life of a young mother. Sierra Johnson, a 27-year-old woman from Northeast D.C., was discovered shot inside a car that was parked with its hazard lights flashing in the 2500 block of Georgia Avenue NW, near Howard University. The incident occurred at approximately 8:04 p.m. Inside the vehicle with Johnson were her two young children, who were unharmed.
Johnson, who was four months pregnant at the time, was rushed to a local hospital but succumbed to her injuries.
The investigation into the shooting quickly revealed that it was domestic in nature. A few days after the incident, on January 25, 2022, the Metropolitan Police Department announced an arrest in the case. The suspect was identified as 27-year-old Joseph Fox of Capitol Heights, Maryland. Court documents revealed that Fox and Johnson had been in an on-and-off relationship since 2014. On the night of the fatal shooting, Fox was in the passenger seat of the car with Johnson when he shot her at least four times, and then exited the vehicle and shot her at least once more before fleeing the scene.
Joseph Fox was charged with second-degree murder while armed, carrying a pistol without a license, and being a felon in possession of a firearm. In March 2022, Fox pleaded guilty to one count of second-degree murder while armed and two counts of assault with a dangerous weapon. On June 17, 2022, he was sentenced to 21 years in prison, to be followed by five years of supervised release. During the sentencing, Johnson's family delivered emotional victim impact statements, expressing their profound loss and the trauma experienced by her children. Johnson's mother directly addressed Fox, stating, 'You have left a hole in my heart. I can never forgive you for what you did to my child.' The victim's oldest sister, who gained custody of the children, recounted the lasting impact on them, sharing that they say, 'the man killed mommy. He kept shooting mommy.'
