In the late afternoon of Wednesday, February 9, 2022, 54-year-old Pamela Thomas was filled with the happy anticipation of a family celebration. She was on her way to a birthday party with her sister, Marilyn Walker, and her own beloved 8-year-old son. In the car with them were a birthday cake and a pan of fried chicken wings she had prepared, tangible symbols of the joy they intended to share.
As they drove through the 500 block of Division Avenue in Northeast Washington, D.C., the festive atmosphere was shattered in an instant.
Caught in the crossfire of what police believe was a dispute between individuals from rival neighborhoods, a stray bullet pierced the window of their vehicle. The bullet struck Pamela Thomas, who tragically died from the gunshot wound. In the backseat, her young son witnessed the horrific event as his mother fell into his lap. The senseless act of violence transformed a day meant for celebration into one of profound and lasting grief for her family.
In the wake of the tragedy, the Metropolitan Police Department launched an investigation. Their efforts led to the arrest of 22-year-old Dion Lee of Northeast D.C. on April 1, 2022. He was subsequently charged with first-degree murder while armed in connection with the fatal shooting of Pamela Thomas. While the arrest brought a measure of relief to her grieving family, it could not erase the devastating loss of a mother and sister whose life was cut short by a random act of violence.
