On a Sunday evening in September 2014, Deandria Monique Conyers, a 27-year-old Black female, was found shot inside her apartment in the 2000 block of Ridgecrest Court, Southeast, Washington, D.C.. Her grandfather discovered her just before 9 p.m. on September 14. At the time of the incident, two of her four children were in the home but were unharmed. Ms.
Conyers was pronounced dead from a single gunshot wound to the head.
The investigation into her death quickly moved forward, and within days, authorities had a suspect in custody. On September 24, 2014, members of the Capital Area Regional Fugitive Task Force arrested 33-year-old Raheem Jones of Northeast, D.C. He was charged with second-degree murder while armed in connection with Deandria's death. Jones was identified as the father of Conyers' youngest child, a 4-month-old infant.
During legal proceedings, it was revealed that Jones and Conyers had ongoing domestic issues, including a conversation about child support on the day of her death. Prosecutors argued that Jones had planned the murder, telling Conyers he was coming to her apartment to bring her money he owed. Cell phone evidence and a series of threatening texts and videos sent between Conyers, Jones, and his fiancée were presented. Despite the defense's argument that there was no evidence placing Jones at the scene, a judge found probable cause to hold him for trial.
