In the afternoon of May 4, 2022, a dispute in the Anacostia neighborhood of Washington, D.C. turned fatal for 24-year-old Davon Sullivan, a male resident of Southeast. The incident unfolded around 3:39 p.m. in the 2300 block of Green Street, Southeast, where police were called for a reported shooting. Upon their arrival, officers discovered Sullivan unconscious, unresponsive, and suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. D.C.
Fire and Emergency Medical Services personnel who responded to the scene could find no signs of life, and he was pronounced dead. His body was later transported to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.
The investigation into the homicide quickly pointed to a suspect. Detectives learned that Sullivan had been involved in an argument just before the shooting. Video evidence of the altercation showed Sullivan walking away from the confrontation when the other individual began shooting at him. The assailant continued to fire even after Sullivan had fallen to the ground. This evidence proved crucial in contradicting any claims of self-defense. The case did not remain unsolved for long.
On May 17, 2022, authorities arrested 31-year-old Raheem Gafari, also a resident of Southeast, D.C., in connection with the killing. Gafari was subsequently charged with first-degree murder while armed. At the time of the incident, Gafari was already under high-intensity supervision for a prior accusation of possessing oxycontin with intent to distribute. Following his arrest for the murder of Davon Sullivan, a judge found that there was substantial probability that Gafari committed the crime and ordered him to remain in jail as he awaits trial for the deadly shooting.
