Sencion was armed with an AK-47-type assault rifle and opened fire in the parking lot before entering the restaurant. Inside, he targeted a table of uniformed National Guard members, including Kelly. The gunman's actions were swift and deadly; he emptied a clip of ammunition outside the restaurant, reloaded, and then continued firing inside. After the initial barrage, Sencion exited the restaurant and fired at other nearby locations, including the Locals BBQ and the H&R Block office next door.
Eduardo Sencion, the shooter, was described as a resident of Carson City who worked at his family's business, Mi Pueblo market, in South Lake Tahoe. He was born in Mexico and held a U.S. passport. Authorities noted that Sencion might have had some mental issues, although the exact motive behind the shooting was not immediately clear. During the incident, Sencion also had two other weapons in his vehicle—a rifle and a handgun—but neither was used in the attack.
The shooting resulted in the deaths of four people, including Kelly and two other National Guard members. A civilian woman who had been flown to Renown Medical Center for surgery also succumbed to her injuries. In addition to the fatalities, eight people were wounded in the attack. Sencion himself died later at the hospital after shooting himself following the rampage.
