In the early hours of January 11, 2016, the life of 18-year-old Caucasian male Grant Watkins was cut short in a burst of violence in a quiet Carson City, Nevada neighborhood. The incident, which unfolded near Blackwell's Pond Park, was initially reported as multiple shots fired, a disturbance that would soon reveal a far more tragic event. A friend rushed Watkins to the Carson Tahoe Regional Medical Center with a gunshot wound to his stomach.
Despite being quickly transferred by Care Flight to Renown Medical Center in Reno, he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at 2:09 a.m.
The investigation into the shooting quickly painted a grim picture of a drug transaction gone horribly wrong. Authorities determined that a group of young men had orchestrated a plan to rob Watkins of approximately three ounces of marijuana. In the course of this robbery, a confrontation ensued, and Watkins was fatally shot. The Carson City Sheriff's Office began a swift and intensive investigation, executing search warrants at multiple residences and combing through evidence to piece together the events of that fateful night and identify all those involved in the deadly scheme.
The first arrests came swiftly. Just hours after the shooting, a SWAT team descended on an apartment on East Fifth Street, taking brothers Jesus Garcia-Manriquez, 18, and Allen Garcia-Manriquez, 19, into custody. A search of their apartment uncovered about $10,000 in cash and various drug paraphernalia. The investigation continued to unravel, leading to a string of further arrests over the following days and weeks. Reed Skenandore, then 21, was identified by detectives as the individual who pulled the trigger and was charged with first-degree murder.
Several other young men were implicated in the plot to rob Watkins, facing charges ranging from accessory to murder and robbery to conspiracy. These individuals included Jacob Huttman, 19, Jonathan Skenandore, 18, Keenan Michael Blackmore, 19, and Daniel Lewis Lease, 20. The extensive investigation revealed a web of involvement, with each suspect playing a role in the events that led to the teenager's death. As the legal process moved forward, several of the accused entered guilty pleas to various charges, including second-degree murder and conspiracy to commit robbery, bringing a measure of judicial closure to the violent end of a young life.
