In the early morning hours of May 6, 2014, a promising life was tragically cut short in Las Vegas, Nevada. Dylan Salazar, a 23-year-old Hispanic male, was fatally shot while sitting in his pickup truck in the parking lot of the Sportsman Royal Manor Apartments on South Boulder Highway. The incident occurred as two men attempted to carjack his vehicle. Still wearing his seatbelt, Salazar was approached and then shot in the head.
He was found deceased in the driver's seat by police and medical personnel who responded to the scene.
Salazar was a respected member of his community, serving as a Specialist in the Nevada Army National Guard. He had enlisted in 2010 and was a heavy horizontal construction engineer with the 277th Engineer Haul Platoon. Alongside his military service, he was in his first year of an apprenticeship to become an electrician with IBEW Local 357. Those who knew him described him as an outgoing and joyful young man who loved to make people laugh.
The investigation into the senseless act of violence led to the swift arrest of two suspects, Julio Renteria, then 20, and Adrian McClintock, then 22. Renteria was identified as the gunman. He was found by police hiding in a nearby storage shed and was identified by the apartment complex's security guard. McClintock was found between two apartment buildings. Both men were taken into custody and held at the Clark County Detention Center.
In the legal proceedings that followed, Adrian McClintock pleaded guilty to charges including conspiracy to commit robbery, conspiracy to commit murder, and discharging a firearm into an occupied vehicle. Julio Renteria pleaded guilty to second-degree murder with the use of a deadly weapon. For his role as the gunman in the botched carjacking that ended a young soldier's life, Renteria was sentenced to serve 18 years to life in prison. The courtroom was filled with dozens of Salazar's friends, family, and fellow soldiers, many of whom were emotional as they remembered a life taken too soon.
